Maeve O’Neill Named BIG EAST Female Athlete Of The Week

O’Neill broke her program record, posting the ninth-fastest NCAA all-time mark in the 800 meters.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College junior Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) was named BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced on Tuesday, Feb. 24. O'Neill earned the honor at the Saucony Battle for Boston after winning her heat and placing third overall in the 800 meters in 2:00.33, breaking her own indoor program record of 2:01.96. Her time ranks as the ninth-fastest mark in NCAA indoor history. The performance also set the Irish senior indoor record in the 800 meters and met the qualifying standard for the World Championships.
 
O'Neill previously earned BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors on Feb. 3 after winning her heat and placing sixth overall in the 800-meter invitational in a program-record time of 2:01.96 at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Jan. 30.
 
To open the season, O'Neill set the program record in the 600 meters at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, winning the event in 1:28.09 on Dec. 6. She followed with another program record on Jan. 17 at the Harvard Beantown Challenge, capturing the 1,000 meters in 2:41.07 to surpass Millie Paladino's 2019 mark of 2:42.13.

The Friar men's and women's team will return to action on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday Feb. 28 at the 2026 BIG EAST Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill.
