CAMBRIDGE MASS. - The Providence College volleyball team (8-3) was defeated by Sacred Heart University (7-4) in five sets (3-2) on Saturday, Sept. 19 to close out non-conference play in Cambridge, Mass. 

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars took set one, 25-18.
  • The teams were knotted 9-9 early in the set.
  • The Friars pulled ahead (19-13) after a 6-1 run. 
  • Freshman Aubrey Easterwood (Dallas, Texas) notched her second kill of the set to close it out. 
  • Senior Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.) led the team with six kills.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Sacred Heart took set two, 25-17.
  • Both teams traded points throughout the set and were deadlocked at 16-16.
  • Sacred Heart won the set following a 9-1 run. 
  • Freshman Ava Dyer (Fort Worth, Texas) notched six digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Sacred Heart took set three, 25-22, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. 
  • The Pioneers started the set with a 6-0 lead. 
  • A 14-4 run gave the Friars a 14-10 advantage. 
  • Sacred Heart equalized the score at 20-20 late in the set.
  • The Pioneers took the lead and closed out set three, 25-22. 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took set four 25-16 and tied the match at 2-2.
  • The Friars extended their lead by four to hold a 13-9 advantage. 
  • Providence maintained the lead for the rest of the set, earning a 25-16 win.
  • The Friars led the set in kills,15-10. 
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Pioneers outlast the Friars, winning set five, 15-11.
  • Junior Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the Friars a 6-4 lead with a kill. 
  • Sacred Heart went on a four-point run and took the lead at 8-6. 
  • The Friars got within one (11-12) following their timeout but Sacred Heart secured the final three points of the match.
  • Adkins led the team with five kills.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Otter notched a career-high 13 kills.
  • The Friars held a 17-4 advantage in blocks.
  • Easterwood led the team in block assists with 10.
  • Providence had six service aces throughout the match. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will open BIG EAST play at home (Sep. 25) against DePaul University at 5:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
