Women's Cross Country Places 2nd At BIG EAST Championship

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Providence College women's cross country team scored 59 points and finished second of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Friday, October 29. PC's men's team scored 61 points and placed fourth behind Notre Dame (43 points), Georgetown (57 points), and Villanova (60 points).
Sophomore Heather Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. was the top finisher for the PC women's team, placing third in a time of 17:36. Junior Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. was PC's other top 10 finisher, finishing eighth in a time of 17:45. Also scoring for the PC women's team were sophomore Claire Shearman of Portsmouth, N.H. (15th - 18:06), freshman Emily Tallen of Kingston, Ontario (16th - 18:13) and senior Dana Ostrander of Ballston Lake, N.Y. (17th - 18:16).
On the men's side, the Friars were led by junior Keith Kelly of Drogheda, Ireland who finished second in a time of 24:27. Freshman Adam Sutton of Preston, England (12th - 25:05), sophomore Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (13th - 25:10), sophomore Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (16th - 25:25) and junior Ciaran Lynch of Limerick, Ireland (18th - 25:29) all scored for the Friars.
The Providence men's and women's teams return to action on Nov. 13 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
