Women's Cross Country Wins Season Opener at Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Providence College women's cross country team defeated nine schools to win its first race of the season on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Central Connecticut Invitational in New Britain, Conn.

Providence dominated the meet, capturing the first seven positions and eight of the top 10 spots. The Friars, who scored 15 points, were led by first-place finisher senior Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario (17:53). Sophomore Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. (second - 17:54), senior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (third - 18:26), sophomore Stephanie O'Reilly (fourth - 18:34) and freshman Heather Cappello (fifth - 18:37) also scored for the Friars.

On the men's side, the Providence J.V. team placed second of nine schools. Friars recorded 67 points, finishing behind Central Connecticut (53 points). Junior Pat Conway of Manchester, N.H., who placed fourth (27:24) was the top finisher for PC. Junior Kevin Donnelly of Somerset, Mass. (seventh - 28:05) and sophomore Patrick Doyle of Seekonk, Mass. (ninth - 28:18) also finished in the top 10 for the Friars.

The women's cross country team returns to action on Sept. 12 at the University of Rhode Island Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
