Gladys Ganiel and Angelo Ciminiello Named Scholar Athletes of Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's cross country and track standout, GLADYS GANIEL (Sr., Harrington, Maine) and baseball standout ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Sr., St. James, New York) have been named the 1998-99 BIG EAST/Target Scholar Athletes of the Year. Both athletes will receive a $4,000 scholarship which will be applied to graduate studies. This is just the second time in the history of the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Awards that two athletes from the same school have taken the honor. Recipients are determined by the league's Academic Awards Committee.

Ganiel is a senior political science major with a 3.98 GPA. She won the 10,000 meter title at the 1998 ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and took the 3,000 meter title at the 1998 New England Championships. Ganiel finished fourth in the 10,000 meters at the '98 BIG EAST Championships and was 13th at the NCAA Championships less than two months later. She was a member of the 1995 NCAA Cross Country Championship team. Academically, Ganiel is a member of the National Dean's List and earned First Team GTE/CoSida Academic All-America honors in cross country and second team honors in track and field in 1997. She is a member of the National Political Science Honor Society and is the winner of the Paul Thompson Award for achievement in the Providence College Western Civilization Honors Program. Ganiel is a finalist for the State University of New York Award for the best paper in the field of political psychology, a national competition. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Ganiel plans to pursue a Ph.D in political science.

Ciminiello, an All-American candidate, is a senior third baseman who earned 1997 BIG EAST First Team accolades. The three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Ciminiello was a Third Team 1998 GTE/CoSida Academic All-Star and a First Team All-New England selection. Last season, Ciminiello hit .376 with 12 homers and 57 rbi's. He ranked second in the BIG EAST in hits (82), runs scored (64), and total bases (144). He also made 11 pitching appearances and was 1-1 with a save and a 4.26 ERA. Ciminiello has a 3.83 GPA in biology and is a Dean's Scholarship recipient who was the 1997 Providence Biology Major of the Year. He is the only Friar student-athlete biology major to attain a 4.0 semester GPA and is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Med Honor Society and the Providence Leadership Council Committee. Ciminiello plans to attend medical school.

Target Stores is in its second year sponsoring the BIG EAST academic awards. The BIG EAST and Target also honor scholar athletes who will receive $2,000 scholarships. The BIG EAST/Target Men's and Women's Basketball Scholar Athletes of the Year will be announced in conjunction with the conference championships. The women's announcement will come on February 26 and the men's on March 2.
