Gladys Ganiel Named GTE First Team Academic All-America

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on April 22 that Providence College senior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) earned 1998-99 First-Team GTE Academic All-America Fall/Winter At-Large honors. It marks the fifth time in her career she has earned GTE Academic All-America honors and the second time she was named to the first team.

Ganiel, a political science major, has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.99 in her four years at Providence.

This fall, Ganiel helped the PC women's cross country team capture the New England Championship and finish first at the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship. She was the Friars' third finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on November 23.

In her four years at Providence, Ganiel has earned a plethora of honors. Some of her more prestigious accolades include being named a state finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship and being named BIG EAST/Target Female Scholar Athlete as the top graduating female athlete in the Conference.
