Women's Hockey Wins Fourth Straight Game

The Providence College women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State University, 7-1, on Sunday, January 20 at Schneider Arena. The win was the fourth consecutive victory for the Friars who have gone unbeaten in their last six games.

Freshman Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored two goals while senior Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) tallied a shorthanded goal and sophomore Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) added another goal to lead a 4-0 Friar first period outburst.

In the second period, sophomore Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba), junior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) and Roth each scored to give PC a 7-0 lead. Freshman Melanie Pudsey (Erin, Ont.) scored the lone goal for the Huskies. Senior captain Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) led the Friars with three assists.

PC outshot St. Cloud State, 33-16. Ellen Brinkman (North St. Paul, Minn.) and Marie Witchey (O'Neill, Neb) combined to make 26 saves in the loss, while PC's Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) stopped 15 shots in the win.

With the win, the Friars improved to 10-8-3 overall. The Huskies fell to 4-19-1.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, January 26 as they host Connecticut at 2:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena.
