The Providence College women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against seventh-ranked University of New Hampshire on Sunday, January 6 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
The Friars opened the scoring at the 14:57 mark of the first period on Kim Mathias' (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) third goal of the season. Randi MacMaster scored for the Wildcats just 21 seconds into the second to tie the game at 1-1. Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Maintoba) gave PC a 2-1 advantage as she scored off a rebound. Junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) was credited with the assist. Stephenson finished with one goal and one assist.
UNH tied the game with 3:30 left in regulation on Jaime VanMassenhove's fifth goal of the season. In the overtime period, the Wildcats outshot the Friars, 4-0, but PC's freshman goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) stopped all four shots. For the game, Thomas finished with 26 saves. UNH's Jenn Huggon made 18 stops.
With the tie, the Friars moved to 6-8-3 overall and 3-4-2 in ECAC Eastern League play, while the Wildcats moved to 12-5-2 overall, 7-1-1 in league play.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, January 12 as they face Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn.
