TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Alabama, 72-56, on Tuesday, December 3 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Alabama's Jamilah Jones scored a career-high 27 points 11-of-15 shooting from the field en-route to a 16-point win for the Crimson Tide. PC was led by sophomores Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) and Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) who each scored 13 points.
At halftime, Providence trailed the Crimson Tide, 28-27. the Friars held Alabama to a dismal 27-percent shooting from the field (10-37), including a three-of-14 shooting performance from three-point range (21.4-percent). Providence shot 45 percent (9-20) from the floor in the first half, including 60 percent from beyond the three-point arc (3-5). At the half, sophomore guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.) led the Friars with six points on two three-point field goals that helped put the Friars up by seven points (17-10) with 11:15 remaining in the first stanza.
Alabama started the second half on a 8-2 scoring run in the first 4:08 to take a 36-29 lead (15:52). The Friars rallied back to within three (42-39) with 12:16 remaining in the game on a 10-4 scoring run, only to see the Crimson Tide explode for a nine-point lead (55-46) with 7:27 on the clock.
Senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) stopped the Crimson Tide run with a three-point basket at the 6:40 mark to make the score 55-49, but Alabama closed the game out with a 17-7 scoring spree to make the final score 72-56.
Freeburg finished with 10 points for Providence. Sophomore forward Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) pulled down a game and career-high 11 rebounds and added six points.
