PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Virginia Tech, 1-0, on Sunday, November 2 at PC's Glay Field. With the loss, Providence (6-8-2, 4-5-1 BIG EAST) finished the BIG EAST schedule in seventh-place, while Virginia Tech (13-4-1, 7-3-0) finished in second-place . The Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament play on Sunday, November 9 at Virginia Tech at 1:00 p.m.
The Friars carried the play early in the first half, but Virginia Tech responded late in the half and nearly took the lead with 1:30 remaining when sophomore Peer Rogge fired a shot from 25 yards out that glanced off the right post. PC came out strong early in the second half as junior Ian Wexler's shot from 20 yards out was saved by Virginia Tech goalkeeper Chase Harrison.
The Hokies scored the only goal of the game in the 68th minute when senior Bobby O'Brien converted a penalty kick after PC was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area. The Friars pressured the Hokies late in the game, but the Hokies withstood the PC comeback attempt and held on for their second consecutive shutout victory.
Junior Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) and freshman Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) combined to make eight saves in net for the Friars, while Harrison stopped seven shots.
Providence College will conclude the regular season on Tuesday, November 4 against Harvard at 1:30 p.m. at Glay Field.
