Women's Basketball Defeats Stony Brook, 59-57

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Stony Brook, 59-57, in non-conference action on Thursday, December 11 in Stony Brook, N.Y. Junior point guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.) scored what proved to be the winning shot with 4.4 seconds left in the game on an inbounds pass from senior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.). Quinn finished the night with a team-high 15 points. Freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) added 12 points, while Blackwell contributed 10 points in the win. Junior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) pulled down a team-high five rebounds and added nine points for PC.
The Friars trailed, 33-32, at halftime. Furstenburg led the Friar effort with 10 first-half points, while Nwafili returned from a three-game absence to chip in six points in the opening session. Kelly Watson led Stony Brook in the first half with seven points. Stony Brook started the game on a 4-0 run, but Providence would earn the lead at the 15:20 mark on a three-point basket by Furstenburg. The Friars pushed their lead to five points on several occasions over the next few minutes, but SBU would tied the game, 19-19, with 8:43 remaining in the half. The Seawolves went on a 10-4 scoring run to take their largest lead of the half (31-25) with 2:10 on the clock. PC would close out the half on a 7-2 run of its own to trail by one point (33-32) at the break.
Quinn opened the second half with a three-point basket to take a 35-33 lead 57-seconds into play. Quinn's three-pointer was the beginning of a 11-5 run that gave Providence a 43-37 lead with 14:25 showing on the clock. SBU would respond with a 5-0 run to cut the Friars lead to one (43-42) with 13:34 remaining in the contest. The two teams would remain scoreless until the 9:16 mark when Quinn hit a layup off of a fast break, pushing PC's lead to three points (45-42). Quinn connected on another break-away layup just seconds later and was fouled. Quinn made the ensuing free-throw to take a 48-42 advantage. Stony Brook countered with a layup of its own at the 8:17 mark to make the score 48-44, and remained as such into the media timeout with 7:40 remaining in the game. The Seawolves went on a 6-3 scoring run to cut PC's lead to one point (51-50) with 4:27 to play. The Friars responded with five unanswered points to push their lead to six with 3:54 to play. SBU's Sherry Jordan knocked down a three-point basket to halt the run with 3:23 remaining to make the score 56-53. The Seawolves took the lead (57-56) on two-consecutive layups. The second layup by Smith to take the lead came with just 1:14 left on the clock. Nwafili went to the free-throw line with 46.6-seconds remaining and scored one of two free-throws to tie the game, 57-57. After two-straight jump ball situations, Providence regained possession with 24-seconds on the clock and called timeout with 5.7 seconds left. Quinn inbounded the ball to Blackwell who made a layup on the right block to give the Friars a 59-57 lead with 4.4 seconds left. SBU had one last attempt at a win with a long three-point shot that never touched the rim as PC took the 59-57 win.
Stony Brook was led by two players who registered double-doubles. Sherry Jordan recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jessica Smith who tallied 14 points and 15 boards.
Providence College (3-5) will host Harvard University in non-conference action on Monday, December 22 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
