The 2003 men's cross country team will be a young, but talented squad with plenty of potential. As Head Coach Ray Treacy enters his 20th season at Providence, the Friars will be without two-time All-American Adam Sutton (Preston, England), who graduated in the spring. Sutton earned All-America honors for the second time last season. However, the team will rely on three juniors, who will help the Friars as they look to continue their success on the regional and national levels.

Last season, the Friars finished 13th overall at the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana, marking the 25th trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championship in school history, including eight consecutive appearances.

Juniors Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland), Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), and Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) will lead the Friars in 2003. The trio competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, helping the Friars to a 13th-place finish.

Wykes, who had an impressive second season with the Friars in 2002, will be one of the top runners for the Friars in 2003. Despite falling, Wykes finished third among Providence runners at the NCAA Championship (31:11). He finished 109th overall. He also placed 15th at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship (31:21) and sixth at the BIG EAST Championships (24:01).

Moulton had a strong sophomore season and will be looking to continue that success in 2003. Moulton finished 154th overall (31:36) at the NCAA Championship. He recorded three top-10 finishes, including a ninth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships (24:06) and a fourth-place finish at the New England Championships (24:10).

Coach Treacy also will rely on Guidera. He made his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship last season and placed 158th overall (31:40). In addition, he took 20th-place at the NCAA Northeast Regional (31:33) and finished 18th at the BIG EAST Championships (24:34).

Sophomores Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ont.) and Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) made a strong impact as freshmen last season and will look to continue to improve in 2003. Dionne and Fagan each competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 2002.

Dionne took 60th-place at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship (32:34) and placed 31st at the BIG EAST Championships (25:11). In addition, he finished 25th at the New England Championships (24:55) and seventh at the New Hampshire Invitational (25:36).

Fagan finished 30th at the BIG EAST Championships (25:08) and 15th at the Dartmouth Invitational (25:55).

Graduate student Tim Curran (Northboro, Mass.) and senior Jamie Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) each return for their final year at Providence and will provide veteran leadership to the team. Curran took 35th-place at the BIG EAST Championships (25:19) and 19th-place at the New England Championships (24:50) in 2002.

Freshmen Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) and Nicholas Weidman (Sudbury, Mass.) will make an impact on the 2003 team. Brown, the son of Providence College's first cross country All-American, Barry Brown, ran at Klein High School, where he led his team to a third-place finish in the state in 2002. Weidman ran at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn., where he was the team's top runner last season.

Coach Treacy believes that the potential is there to have a successful team in 2003. Despite being a young squad, the Friars will have depth and will have several runners with a wealth of experience, which should help the team to yet another successful season.
