PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The fifth-ranked Providence College women's cross country team and the 15th-ranked Providence men will compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 27 in Minneapolis, Minn. The men's race begins at 1:00 p.m., while the women's race starts at 2:00 p.m.
The Providence women enter the 6,000-meter race as the highest-ranked team in the latest FinishLynx/NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Poll. Among the 30 teams competing, 13 are ranked nationally including the meet's defending champion Michigan State, which is ranked 15th. Providence has captured the Roy Griak Invitational three times under 20-year Head Coach Ray Treacy, including its most recent victory in 1998. The Friars also placed first in 1995 and 1996. Individually, Providence has had two winners -- Maria McCambridge was victorious in 1996 and Sara Dupre captured the event in 1997.
The Friars have won their first two meets of the season, capturing the Providence College Invitational on September 5 and the Boston College Select Meet on September 12. In both races, juniors Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) and Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) finished in the top two positions. At the PC Invitational, Smith finished first ahead of second-place Cullen. At the BC Select Meet, Cullen took the top spot, while Smith finished one second behind. The Friars also are led by junior Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland), sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.).
On the men's side, the field will be just as strong. There will be 31 schools competing in the 8,000-meter race, including eight teams that are ranked in the latest MONDO/NCAA Men's Cross Country Poll. The field features second-ranked Wisconsin and fifth-ranked Oregon. Oregon captured the Invitational last season, but Wisconsin has won the event nine times, with its latest victory coming in 2001. Providence also has a strong tradition at the Roy Griak Invitational. In addition to winning two team titles (1998 and 2000), the Friars have had three individual champions. Keith Kelly, who won the 2000 NCAA Individual Championship, captured the Roy Griak crown that same year. Ben Noad won the race in 1997 and 1998 and holds the distinction as the only runner to win multiple titles in the men's race.
The Friars are led by juniors Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ont.) and Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland), who have helped the team win its first two meets of the season. Most recently, Moulton, Wykes and Guidera placed first, second and fourth, respectively, at the Boston College Select Meet (September 12) as the Friars captured the event. The Friars also won the Providence College Invitational (September 5). Sophomore Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ont.), graduate student Tim Curran (Northboro, Mass.) and senior Jamie Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) also will lead PC.
