Women's Basketball Defeated By UMass, 53-39

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Massachusetts, 53-39, at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. on Wednesday, December 1. Katie Nelson poured in a game-high 13 points and registered five assists, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Minutewomen, who improve to 2-3 overall. Providence College sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the Friar effort. PC drops to 0-5 on the season.
Providence held their first halftime lead of the season against the Minutewomen, 23-22. Snyder scored all 12 of her points and pulled down 12 boards in the first half to fuel the Friars in the opening session. UMass took a seven-point lead (13-6) just 5:27 into the game. Providence rallied back to tie the game, 13-13, with 10:10 on the clock after making a 7-0 run. UMass pushed its lead to three (18-15) with 6:13 remaining, but Providence closed out the first half on an 8-4 run to take a one-point lead into the locker room (23-22).
In the second half, Providence extended its lead to six points (34-28) with 12:43 left in the game. However, the Friars would score just five more points the rest of the way. Over the final 12:43, Massachusetts dominated the Friars with a 25-5 scoring run, including a 14-0 run by the Minutewomen over the final 6:29.
Tamara Tatham and Pam Rosanio joined Nelson in double figures for UMass. Tatham netted 12 points and added a team-high 11 rebounds. Rosanio scored 10 points in the victory.
Junior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) joined Snyder in double figures for PC with a career-high 10 points. She also handed out five assists.
Providence College (0-5) returns to action on Saturday, December 4 against Wake Forest in a non-conference match up. The game is scheduled to be played at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 5:30 p.m.
