PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College cross country will host the second annual Providence College Invitational on Friday, September 3 at Goddard Park in Warwick, R.I. Providence will run against New Hampshire in both the men's and women's races. The women's race will begin at 3:00 p.m., while the men's race will start at 4:00 p.m. The Friars will be competing in their first meet of the 2004 season after a strong 2003 campaign. The women's team finished third at the NCAA's, led by All-Americans Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) and Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland). Smith took second place, while Cullen placed fifth as Providence was the only team to have two athletes finish in the top five. Providence also will rely on senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) and junior Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand), who placed 41st and 53rd, respectively at the NCAA Championship. Senior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Jensen (Lincoln, R.I.) also competed at the NCAA's last season. Last season, UNH captured the ECAC and America East titles. The Wildcats are led by graduate student Caitlin Hayes (Keene, N.H.) and Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.). Hepp was a second-place finisher at the ECAC's. On the men's side, the Friars finished 24th at the NCAA's. Senior Dylan Wykes was PC's top runner with a 37th-place finish at the NCAA's. Providence also will be led by seniors Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) and Pat Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) who competed at the NCAA's last season. The Wildcats also won the IC4A's and the America East title. UNH is led by senior captain Tim Perry and junior Anthony Truax (Dover, N.H.). Truax finished seventh at the IC4A's, while Perry placed seventh. Following the PC Invitational, the Friars will compete at the Fordham Invitational on Saturday, September 11.
