PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Northeastern, 6-1, on Sunday, October 30 at Matthews Arena in Providence, R.I. Seniors Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) combined for three goals and three assists in the victory. Providence scored five of six goals on the power play. The Friars improve to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in HOCKEY EAST play.

At the 4:44 mark of the first period, Thatcher put providence on the board with a short-handed goal assisted by freshman Brittany Simpson (Ontario, Canada). Simpson was credited with her first collegiate point on the play. At 10:52, junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored the game-winner on the power play, with assists from Payton and freshman Maura Grainger (Ithaca, N.Y.).

The Huskies got on the board quickly in the second period with an even-strength goal by Crystal Rochon at 00:25. Amy Goodney and Nikki Petrich assisted on the play.

The Friars continued to pour on the offense with a power play goal by sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) at 3:19 in the second period. Assists were credited to Thatcher and junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.). At the 14:37 mark, senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) netted a rebound puck off of back-to-back shots by Smith and Gigliotti that gave Providence a 4-1 advantage leading up to the third period.

The Friars never let up as they scored two more goals on the power play in the third period. At 3:32, Thatcher netted her second goal of the night with help from Payton and Gigliotti. Ashley Payton concluded the game with a power play goal at 15:04. Sophomore Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) was credited with the assist.

Providence went five-for-11 on the power play, and 11-for-11 on the penalty kill. Providence outshot Northeastern, 37-22.

Sarah Belliveau recorded a game-high 31 saves, while senior netminder Jana Bugden (Cornerbrook, Newfoundland) recorded 19 saves in 54:50 minutes of action. Junior Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.) recorded two saves in 5:08 minutes of the third period.

The Friars will travel to face top-ranked St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. on Saturday, November 6. The very next day on Sunday, November 7, the Friars are scheduled to take on Clarkson at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y. Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
