PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's ice hockey team knotted with Maine, 3-3, on Saturday, November 12, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Providence scored all of its goals on the special teams, including a short-handed goal by senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.). The Friars are 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.
Sheri Wauters put Maine on the board at 14:06 of the first period with assists from Jenna Cowan and Chantal Jaillet. At 15:48, Thatcher netted her sixth goal of the season and her nation-leading fourth short-hander. Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) recorded her sixth assist of the season on a play to senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) who scored her fourth goal of the season at 18:52. The Friars held a 2-1 advantage leading into the second period.
Cheryl White tied the game, 2-2, with a power play goal at 3:48 of second period. Vanessa Vani and Kelly Law were credited with assists on the play. At 8:17, freshman Katy Beach (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Friars a 3-2 lead. However, White equalized the game with her second power play goal of the game at 12:23. Julie Poulin and Kelly Law earned the assists.
Both teams battled back-and-forth defensively in the third period and forced overtime action. Providence outshot Maine, 3-2, in the overtime period but the score did not budge.
Providence outshot the Black Bears, 27-19. The Friars went two-for-nine on the power play, while going four-for-six on the penalty kill.
Senior Providence goalie, Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 16 saves, while Genevieve Turgeon grabbed a game-high 24.
Providence will finish the back end of the series at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m.
