Providence Field Hockey Game Preview vs. Louisville

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (7-3, 1-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Sunday's game against Louisiville with a 7-3 overall record, and a 1-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars have won seven of their last eight games, including a 3-1 win over Harvard in their most recent contest on September 26.

Freshman Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) leads Providence in scoring with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. Senior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) is second on the team in scoring with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Stoddard's three goals and four assists each mark single-season career highs. She entered her fourth season with the Friars having scored just four points on one goal and two assists. The Friar offense has also been aided by junior Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) whose seven assists mark a single-season career high. She is tied for first in the BIG EAST and ranked 11th nationally assists per game. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has played 634 minutes in goal this season and has posted a 7-3 record, including two shut-out victories. She has made 39 saves and has allowed just eight goals for a 0.830 save percentage, ranking her number two in the country, and a 0.88 goals against average, ranking third nationally. Combined with graduate student Kim Vesling (Pittsford, N.Y.) who has made three appearences for a total of 66 minutes, the Friar goalkeepers are fourth in the nation for save percentage (0.854) as well as goals against average (0.78). The Friars also boast a 0.44 shutouts per game average, the sixth highest in the country.

The Friars are averaging 15.6 shots per game this season, while holding their opponents to just 8.0 shot attempts per game. In addition, Providence is scoring an average of 2.40 goals per game compared to its opponent's average of 0.80 goals per contest. Of the Friars 24 goals on the season, 14 have come in the first half of play.

#16 UNIVERSITY of LOUSVILLE (6-4, 1-0 BIG EAST): The 16th ranked Louisville Cardinals field hockey team enters the weekend with a 6-4 overall record, including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Cardinals are coming off of a 3-1 victory over St. Louis on September 23. Prior to traveling to Providence, Louisville will make a stop in Storrs, Conn. to take on No. 3 Connecticut on Friday, September 28 at 5:00 p.m. Freshman Nicole Youman leads Louisville in scoring with 13 points off of five goals and three assists. Senior Allison Maffitt ranks second on the team in points with 12 on five goals and two assists. Leading the team in assists (six) is junior Lauren Schaefer whose two assists against St. Louis on September 23 and instrumental defensive efforts earned her the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 24. Schaefer ranks 18th nationally in assists per game.

The Cardinals have been dominant inside the circle, averagine 7.9 penalty corners per game, 79 overall, ranking 12th nationally. Louisville's opponents have averaged just 4.1 per game. Marie-Claire Heller has played 632 minutes in goal for the Cardinals this season and has posted a 5-4 record. She has allowed 17 goals and has made 36 saves for a 1.88 goals against average and a 0.679 save percentage.

Louisville returns home to Trager Stadium on Friday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. to take on BIG EAST foe Rutgers.
