Field Hockey Defeats No. 15 Old Dominion In BIG EAST Opener, 2-0

Bo Martina and Charlotte Lorden each scored one goal; Friars defeat Monarchs for just the second time in program history.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated No. 15 Old Dominion, 2-0, to open BIG EAST Conference play on Sept. 18 in Norfolk, Va. The Friars defeated ODU for just the second time in program history, and improved to 6-1 on the season (1-0 BIG EAST). Old Dominion dropped to 4-2 on the year (0-1 BIG EAST).
 
GAME FLOW:
• Senior Bo Martina gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 6:07 mark as she converted a penalty corner attempt. It marked her third goal of the season and was assisted by junior Johanna Mahner and senior Charlotte Lorden.
• Lorden gave the Friars a two-goal lead at 54:02 as she converted a penalty stroke. It marked her second goal of the year, and first penalty-stroke conversion of her career.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Porter was credited with the shut-out victory. She recorded one save in the match early in the first quarter.
• Providence outshot ODU, 6-3, including a 4-1 margin in shots on goal. 
• ODU held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars defeated ODU for just the second time in program history. Heading into Friday's match-up, ODU led the series, 14-1. Providence's previous win over the Monarchs was on Oct. 28, 2016. On that day, the Friars claimed a 1-0 victory vs. ODU in Norfolk, Va.
• Providence has won six-straight matches since falling to Boston College, 3-1, in its season opener on Aug. 28. Additionally, the Friars have won four-straight games on the road.
• The last time the Friars defeated a ranked opponent was on Oct. 18, 2024. On that day, Providence claimed a 3-2 over then-No. 5 UConn in double-overtime.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to the Ocean State to play a non-conference match at Brown University on Sunday, Sept. 20. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Goldberger Family Field and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
