Friars Score Three Second-Half Goals To Defeat Bryant, 3-0

Lily Procaccianti, Johanna Mahner and Rhylee Givens each scored one goal for Providence.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team netted three second half goals en route to a 3-0 shut-out victory at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. on Sept. 6. Senior Lily Procaccianti scored the Friars' first goal at 59:41 before junior Johanna Mahner and freshman Rhylee Givens tacked on insurance goals in the fourth quarter. The Friars improved to 3-1 on the season, including victories in each of their last three games. The Bulldogs dipped to 2-2 on the year. 
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0.
• Bryant outshot Providence 4-2 in the opening frame, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
• Each team registered one penalty corner in the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence earned two penalty corners in the opening 1:31 of the second quarter, with the second yielding a yellow card on Bryant's Maddy DeFilippo.
• At the 21:10 mark, Piper Cline hit the left post with the Friars' fifth shot attempt of the day, which kept the game level at 0-0.
• The Friars dominated possession in the second quarter and outshot the Bulldogs 3-0. Providence also recorded a 3-0 edge in penalty corners.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Procaccianti netted her team-best fourth goal of the season to put Providence ahead, 1-0, at the 40:40 mark off an assist from freshman Darcy Quaile.
• The Friars posted a 3-1 advantage in shots during the third quarter and recorded a 2-1 edge in offensive corners.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Mahner put Providence ahead 2-0 just 38-seconds into the fourth quarter during a penalty corner. 
• After the initial shot by Bo Martina was saved by Bryant's goalkeeper, Mahner batted home the rebound at the left post, unassisted.
• Bryant pulled their goalkeeper with 3:42 remaining in favor of the extra attacker.
• Givens scored her second goal of the season on an empty net with 19-seconds left. 
• Providence attempted five shots in the fourth quarter and put four of them on target. Bryant attempted one shot in the fourth quarter.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Procaccianti leads the Friars with four goals this season. She scored all four goals this weekend, including her first career hat trick on Sept. 4 vs. New Haven during an 11-0 win.
• Mahner's goal marked her first of the season and second of her career.
• The Friars have won three-straight games, including back-to-back shutouts vs. New Haven (11-0) and Bryant (3-0).
• Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Porter improved to 2-1 on the year and earned her first shut-out victory of the season on Sunday vs. Bryant with four saves.
• Providence outshot Bryant 13-6 overall, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.
• The Friars also registered an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners in the victory.
• The Friar defense allowed four shots in the first quarter, but held the Bulldogs to just two shots the remainder of the game.
• Through four games, 12 different players have combined to score 18 goals. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action Friday, Sept. 11 against Sacred Heart University at 11:00 a.m. The game will be played at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Providence will remain on the road to face Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Noon. The match will be played in Hempstead, N.Y.
