Box Score

The Providence College women's soccer (6-5-2, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) team earned its first BIG EAST win of the season over Villanova (8-3-2, 1-3-1) by a score of 1-0 on Sunday, October 4. Providence improves to 8-10-2 all-time and 1-0-1 under Head Coach Jim McGirr against the Wildcats.

Senior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) has played brilliantly all year for the Friars and did so again on Sunday. Camburn gave the Wildcat defense problems all day with her well executed runs and play both on and off the ball. In the 64th minute, Camburn received a marvelous through ball from freshmen Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.), settled the ball and put it past the Villanova goalkeeper to put the Friars up 1-0. The goal would be the difference in the game and Camburn's third game-winning goal of the season. Camburn leads the team in goals (seven), assists (three) and points (17).

The midfield for the Friars, led by senior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) and junior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) played exceptional. The Friar midfield was able to keep possession of the ball, create quality scoring opportunities and help hinder the Wildcate offense.

The Friar backline led by left back Katelin Blaine(Warwick, N.Y.), senior right back Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.) and junior center back Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) played solid for 90 minutes and were able to hold the Wildcat offense scoreless. Freshmen Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) played beyond her years, with poise and assertiveness the entire match. The Wildcats offense never gave up and pressured the Friar backline all game, especially in the last 10 minutes during which time Villanova took five of its 13 total shots. The Friars would withstand the offensive surge and keep the shutout intact.

Junior Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) got the start in goal for the Friars. She faced a total of six shots and recorded her first shutout of the year. In the 80th minute, Villanova would have their best scoring opportunity when sophomore forward Katie Ryan had only Schott to beat for a Wildcat goal. Ryan took the shot from inside the 18-yard box, but Schott managed to come up with a a huge save to help the Friars maintain their 1-0 lead.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 9 when they travel to take on BIG EAST opponent the University of South Florida at 7:30 p.m.
