MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Providence College women's cross country team placed fifth in a talented 29-team field at the Roy Griak Invitational on September 25. The event was hosted by the University of Minnesota and held at Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Friars recorded 139 points in the Jack Johnson Women's Gold Race (Division I) and were led by sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), who finished the 6K course in a time of 21:09.2.
Freshman Laura Hoer, of NC State, won the individual title in a time of 20:38.4, topping a field of 300 student-athletes. Finishing ahead of Providence in the team standings were Arizona (76 points), New Mexico (102 points), Iowa State (113 points) and Duke (119 points).
Friar freshman Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) joined Greany among the list of top-10 individual finishers in 10th place with a time of 21.23.0. Nagel was the second freshman in the race to cross the finish line. Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 30th place (21.49.9), followed by 2009 All-American Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in 35th place (21:54.7). Also scoring for Providence was sophomore Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), who placed 59th (22:16.1).
The Providence College women's cross country team returns to action on October 9 at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. The event will be held at Franklin Park.
