McCarthy Runs Four-Minute Mile

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - Providence College men's track and field kicked off the second semester portion of the indoor season this weekend, turning in several quality performances at the GBTC Invitational at Harvard.
Senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland), running in his first competition of the school-year, placed first in the mile, crossing in 4:00.74. The time was just three seconds off of McCarthy's personal best. Junior Dominic Channon grabbed second with a clocking of 4:08.99, while freshman Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H) was seventh overall (and the third collegiate runner) with a 4:14.40. The effort helped all three men qualify for the Big East Championships.
The Friars also shined in the 4 x 400 meter relay, capturing first overall. The quartet of Tom Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.), Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass) and Chris Booker (Philadelphia, Pa.) crossed in 3:25.32.
Sophomore Nik Rebovich (New Hartford, N.Y.) was third in the 800-meters, stopping the watch at 1:57.24. In the 3000-meter, freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) was the first collegiate runner (second overall) with a time of 8:30.49. while sophomore Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) was the second college harrier in 8:47.84.
Also of note, senior Phillip Connaughton (Broken Arrow, Okla.) grabbed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.91) and classmate Stannard had the eighth-best overall time in the 200-meters ( 22.86).
The Friars compete again this Friday and Saturday at the BU Invitational in Boston, Mass.
