Track and Field Teams Impress at Terrier Invitational

BOSTON, MASS. - Thirteen different competitors from the Providence College men's and women's track and field teams qualified for the BIG EAST Championships, this weekend, all recording impressive performances at the Terrier Invitational at Boston University.
On the men's side, the two-day event was highlighted by PC junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) who cruised to victory in the 1000-meters with a time of 2:25.41. Freshman classmate Francis Hernandez (Windham, N.H.) was a step behind, placing third with a 2:27.32.
Matthews' countryman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand earned second in the mile, crossing in 4:06.56, two seconds better than his mile-run a week ago at the GBTC Invitational. Other BIG EAST qualifiers in the event included PC freshman Alex Wallace (Waipukarau, New Zealand) who grabbed 11th (4:10.00) and junior Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) who finished 16th (4:11.59).
Friar senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) was third in the 3000-meters, clocking in at 7:53.33.
Senior Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) will also be running at the conference meet. He placed 20th in the 400-meters, while senior Tom Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.) qualified with a :22.60 run in the 200-meters.
For the Friar women, Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) led the way with a second place finish in the 5000-meters with a 16:10.86. Junior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.) also reached qualifying status in the event. She earned 13th with a 17:02.11.
The Friars also found success in the 3000-meters, with junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placing fifth (9:21.93) and junior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland) just behind in ninth (9:41.11).
Finally, sophomore Christina Lavigne (Shelton, Conn.) enjoyed a solid outing in the pits, grabbing fifth in the triple jump (11.72 meters) and 12th in the long jump (4.93 meters).
Both Providence squads will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Giegengack Invitational at Yale.
