Friar Cross Country Teams Dominate Field At UNH Dual Meet

DURHAM, N.H. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams dominated the course in the 2011 season opener at the UNH Dual Meet in Durham, N.H. on September 3. Junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) represented the Friars well, taking home individual victories on both sides, while guiding their teams to respective victories.
"Today's meet was a very good start to the season for both teams," said legendary Friar Head Coach Ray Treacy. "We had some solid individual performances from Shelby and David. There is still a long way to go in the season, with a lot of work to do."
The women's team scored 23 points and defeated host New Hampshire (41 points) and Maine (65 points). The Friars locked up six of the top eight spots in the race, led by Greany's first-place finish in a time of 17:17.3. Two UNH runners crossed the line in second and third place, before a handful of black and white jerseys filled spots No. 4 through No. 8. Senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) notched a fourth-place finish in a time of 17:56. Junior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) placed fifth on the day (18:27), followed by freshman Julie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) and senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.). Solimine finished sixth (18:28), Thek earned seventh (18:29) and Champagne crossed the line in eighth place (18:43).
Providence also took the team title on the men's side with a total of 21 points, topping New Hampshire (55 points) and Maine (57 points). Six Friar runners placed in the top 10, including four harriers in the top five. McCarthy led the way with a first-place individual finish in a time of 18:30.0. He completed the course 31-seconds ahead of the event's second-place finisher, Riley Master, from the University of Maine (19:01).
Senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) placed third for the Friars on the day with a time of 19:19. Junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) finished fourth (19:45) and fifth (19:46), respectively. Also placing in the top 10 for Providence were junior Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) and junior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand). Malnati finished eighth (20:06) and Wallace crossed the line in 10th position (20:17).
