The Golden Eagles captured the first set, 25-15, behind seven kills from Autumn Bailey. Senior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) led the Friars in kills, tallying four. Ziegler posted a .500 hitting percentage in the set. Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) recorded nine assists in the stanza. Neither team recorded a block in the set.
Marquette won the second set, 25-15. Wiesler led the Friars with eight assists while sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) added four digs. Ziegler, Trzeciak and Fitzgerald all registered two kills in the set.
In the third set, PC held a 10-6 edge early on but Marquette came back to take the set, 25-12, to win the match. Trzeciak had a set-best three kills for Providence and Cruz recorded six digs.
"I'm proud of our effort and I'm excited to play them in the second round of the BIG EAST," said Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson.
For the match, the Friars were led by Trzeciak and Fitzgerald, who both tallied seven kills. Wiesler ended the match with 23 assists while Cruz reached double-digit digs with 13.
Marquette was led by Bailey who recorded 15 kills. Lindsey Gosh also reached double-digit in kills for the Golden Eagles, with 11. Gabby Brenda had a team-best 25 digs while Lauren Houg and Bailey had a team-best 13 digs.
The Friars play again tomorrow (Sept. 27) at 5:00 p.m., hosting DePaul at Alumni Hall.
