MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated at Marquette, 1-0, on Oct. 11 in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars moved to 9-6 (2-3 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 6-6-3 (3-2 BIG EAST).
The first half closed scoreless with Marquette leading in shots (5-4) and both teams even in corner kicks taken (2).
In the 55th minute of play the Golden Eagles scored to get on the board, 1-0. Liz Bartels, who picked up a rebound from Darian Powell, tucked the ball inside the right post.
For the game, junior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) made five saves, while Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel made four saves in the shutout. Marquette held the advantage in shots (15-11), shots-on-goal (7-4), and corner kicks (6-5) in 90 minutes of action. Six of Providence's 11 shots were taken by senior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.).
"Marquette at home is always a tough team to play against and today was no different," Head Coach Sam Lopes said. "It was a hard fought game where both teams created several chances. We lacked a bit of quality and timing in the final play to score on the several chances we did get, but overall I was pleased with the attitude and effort displayed by the team. As a group, we're disappointed, but there is much to be proud of and build on from today's performance. Today we didn't lose, we just didn't win, and that is a big difference."
The Friars will return to action with an away game versus Creighton at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 in Omaha, Neb.
