PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) was recognized on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The league announced its weekly award winners on Monday, Oct. 31. Both players had a significant impact in the Friars' 1-0 overtime victory at Old Dominion on Oct. 28, helping Providence clinch a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by Jeep.
Guilbert earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career. She registered her first career shut-out victory in BIG EAST Conference action, and third career shutout overall, in the Friars' 1-0 overtime win at Old Dominion (Oct. 28). She tied her career high in saves (eight), including two stops during the overtime session. The win also marked the Friars' first-ever victory against Old Dominion, having lost the previous five meetings, including three-straight BIG EAST regular-season games since the Monarchs joined the league in 2013.
O'Reilly tallied the overtime game winner against Old Dominion on Oct. 28, marking the first goal of her collegiate career with the Friars. O'Reilly's goal came 9:44 into the overtime session and was her only shot attempt of the game, as she converted a pass from senior Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) during a penalty corner.
Providence returns to action on Friday, Nov. 4 as it takes on Liberty in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. Providence and Liberty finished in a tie for second in the regular-season conference standings. The Friars enter tournament play as the No. 3 seed, while Liberty has claimed the No. 2 seed, by virtue of its 2-1 win over Providence on Oct. 21.
