ORONO, MAINE - The Providence College field hockey program rebounded nicely from a season-opening loss to Maine to earn a 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Orono, Maine. Five different players scored goals for the Friars to claim the victory, including three freshmen. Senior midfielder Adrienne Houle (Burlington, Ontario) paced the Friars with two goals.
The Friars built a 2-0 lead in the first half as two freshmen found the back of the cage for their first collegiate goals. Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) struck first, unassisted, at the 12:42 mark, followed by a goal from Floor Rozemeijer (Santpoort-Zuid, Holland) on a penalty corner. Senior Emily Humiston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was credited with the assist.
The Friars maintained their two-goal lead (2-0) until SHU's Rebecca Hauser converted on a penalty corner as time expired in the first half. Nicole Granito earned the assist for the Pioneers.
In the second half, the Friars put the game away with a 4-0 scoring advantage. Senior Kali Kilmer (Wayne, Pa.) notched her second goal of the season on a penalty stroke in the 45th minute of play to give PC a 3-1 lead.
Houle followed with back-to-back goals at 50:33 and 54:08, respectively. Houle's first goal came off a rebound, while the second came off a feed from freshman Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.).
In the 66th minute, freshman Sylvia Miller (Severn, Md.) added an insurance goal to round out the scoring, which was assisted by sophomore Kari Moyer (Perkasie, Pa.).
Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, Pa.) recorded five saves to earn the victory for Providence, while her Emily Degennaro posted three saves for Sacred Heart.
The Friars out-shot the Pioneers 20-10, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Providence also held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
Providence returns to action on Friday, Sept. 2 and will host Vermont in its home opener at Lennon Family Field at 6:00 p.m. Providence remains on its home field to face Bryant on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
