Six-Game Win Streak Comes To An End As Friars Fall In Overtime At Brown, 4-3

Lily Procaccianti netted two goals, including the game-tying goal with 1:37 left in regulation to force OT.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team's winning streak came to a halt on Sunday, Sept. 20 with a 4-3 overtime loss at Brown University. Providence entered the match on a six-game win streak and dropped to 6-2 with the loss. The Bears improved to 3-3 on the year. Senior forward Lily Procaccianti netted two goals for Providence, including the game-tying goal to force overtime with 1:37 remaining in regulation.

GAME FLOW:
• Senior Carly van Benten broke through for the Friars, offensively, to give her squad a 1-0 lead at the 9:36 mark. Junior Martu Torre Festa carried the ball into the circle on the left baseline and dumped a pass to Van Benten who was alone in the middle for the shot.
• Brown evened the game, 1-1, on the first penalty corner for either team at the 20:31 mark. Grace Almeida was credited with the score after picking up the rebound on a blocked shot and lifting it into the cage.
• At halftime, the game remained level (1-1). Providence led in shots (6-2), shots on goal (4-2), while each team recorded one penalty corner.
• Procaccianti tallied her first goal of the day at 42:59 as she deflected a feed from Bo Martina. The goal gave Providence a 2-1 advantage.
• Just 1:06 later, Brown answered with an unassisted tally from Mia Karine Myklebust at 44:05 (2-2).
• Myklebust gave the Bears their first lead of the afternoon at 46:19 with her second goal of the day.
• The Friars pulled their goalkeeper, Ava Porter in favor of the extra attacker with 3:23 to play in the fourth quarter.
• With Porter on the sidelines, the Friars' defensive penalty corner unit fended off an attacking penalty corner by Brown with 2:10 to play.
• Providence then capitalized on the offensive end as Procaccianti netted her second of the day off a rebound with 1:37 left in the match.Â
• The two teams finished regulation in a 3-3 tie and went to overtime.
• The Bears earned a penalty corner during the extra session which yielded the game winning goal by Kiersten Smith at 68:27. The assist was credited wo Kate Siedem.

• Through eight games, she leads the team in points (15) and goals (seven) and has recorded one assist.

• Martina tallied her second assist of the season.
• Van Benten and Martina are tied for third on the team in scoring with eight points each.
• Providence's win streak came to an end at six-consecutive victories. It matched the longest win streak since 2006. That year, Providence put together two six-game win streaks en route to 18 victories on the season.
• The Friars dropped to 3-2 on the road. Today's loss at Brown marked Providence's first loss since dropping a 3-1 decision at Boston College in the season opener (Aug. 28).
