Cross Country Set To Compete At Beantown Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country team are set to compete at the Beantown Invitational on Sept. 16. at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Both the men and women were ranked in the latest USTFCCCA national poll. The women are ranked third overall, while the men are ranked 20th. The women's race will begin at 3:00 p.m. followed by the men's race at 3:30. A mixed open race will follow the men at 4:15 p.m.
The Friars look to repeat as team champions, as the women took first with 42 points in 2015. This year's women's race will feature mainly regional competition. In addition, other teams competing will be Brown, Boston College and Dartmouth, who are ranked seventh, eighth and 10th in the Northeast, respectively.
The women will look to Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), Amelia Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.), Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.), Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) to lead the team. Collins, Paladino, Wheeler, Lembo and Barry took the first five spots at the season opening UNH Tri-Meet on Sept. 3. In addition to these five, junior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) will be make her season debut at Beantown. Last season, Collins, Lembo and Ilarda all had strong races at Beantown, finishing fourth, 12th and 16th, respectively.
The Providence men did not compete at the Beantown Invitational last season. The men look to make a strong impression by racing their full squad against a field that includes both regional and nationally ranked teams. Highlighting the field is Arkansas, which is ranked sixth in the national rankings. The field also will feature Duke and a number of Northeast teams, including Dartmouth, Brown and Connecticut, who are ranked seventh, eighth and 14th in the Northeast region.
Senior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland), graduate student Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.), graduate student Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), senior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), and senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) look to lead the men's team. The Friars will also be looking for junior Thomas O'Neill (Middletown, N.J.), and sophomores Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) to make an impact. Sophomore Nicolas Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) will make his cross country debut at Beantown.
