Hayley Lunny scored two third-period goals to lift the Friars to victory.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 9 Providence College women's hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University, 2-1, on Saturday night (Nov. 24) to capture the 2018 Nutmeg Classic Championship.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) nearly put the Friars on the board around the midpoint of the first period. Her wrister beat Abbie Ives but rang the crossbar and stayed out.
- Quinnipiac ended up striking first, with just 33.5 seconds left in the opening stanza. Kate MacKenzie scored on a shot from the left point. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Kati Tabin and Randi Marcon.
- Providence outshot Quinnipiac 8-7 in the second period but was unable to find the equalizer. Annelise Rice (Excelsior, Minn.) had one of the team's best chances, as she took a shot on a 3-on-1 that was gloved down by Ives.
- Meaghan Rickard (Coventry, R.I.) was called for a hook with 1:18 remaining in the period. It was the game's first penalty. Providence killed it off to close the second and open the third.
- Quinnipiac took back-to-back penalties, which afforded the Friars nearly four-straight minutes of power play time. Providence was able to convert after 3:07 on the man-advantage.
- Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) scored the tying goal at the 8:03 mark of the third. Her power-play goal, which was her second strike of the season, was assisted by Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia).
- Murphy's assist was her team-leading 12th of the season. She extended her point streak to eight games with the helper. Dove's assist was her fifth of the season.
- Lunny struck again for the Friars at the with 5:24 remaining in the game. Neve Van Pelt (Mitchell, Ontario) took a shot out near the blue line. Lunny corralled the rebound and scored to make it 2-1.
- Lunny's multi-goal game marked the first of her career. She has had one other multi-point game this season.
- Van Pelt's assist was her second of the season. She now has four total points.
- Rice was credited with the secondary assist on the game winner. It was her first point as a Friar.
- Madison Myers (Colchester, Vt.) finished the game with 20 saves. She has allowed just one goal or fewer in eight of her 12 games played this season.
- Hayley Lunny and Madison Myers were named to the Nutmeg Classic All-Tournament Team.
- Providence is now 12-2-0 on the season and is off to the best start since the 1991-92 season. The Friars have won eight-straight games.
