The Friars open the 2020-21 season with a two-game series against Merrimack. Puck drop on Friday (Nov. 20) is set for 4:00 p.m. and on Saturday (Nov. 21) at 3:00 p.m.
Scouting the Friars
The Friars finished 2019-2020 with a 18-14-4 overall record and a 15-10-2 mark in Hockey East. Providence finished in fourth place in the conference and hosted New Hampshire in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Head Coach
Matt Kelly has now guided his team to the Hockey East Tournament in his first two seasons at the helm.
Providence returns top scorer,
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden), who posted 17 goals and 11 assists last season for 28 points. Hjalmarsson was the only player in double digits for goals.
The Friars return five of seven defensemen from last season, including sophomore
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine). DeBlois finished her freshman campaign with 23 points, third-best on the team, after tallying six goals alongside 17 assists. She was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team and ranked fourth in points and tied for second in assists among all Hockey East rookies.
In net, Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) returns for her senior season. She finished 2019-20 with 448 saves, a 1.74 goals against average and a .929 save percentage with two shutouts.
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fifth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 13. Providence received 56 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Boston University (82), Boston College (71) and UConn (64).
Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (52), Maine (41), Vermont (39), Merrimack (24), and Holy Cross (21).

Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes eight new players to the roster for 2020-21.
Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario) joins the programs as a junior transfer. She played 69 games at RIT (2018-20) and registered 27 points on 16 goals and 11 assists. Freshmen

2019-20 Award Winners
Lauren DeBlois headlined the Friars' Hockey East Awards last season. At the conclusion of the season, she was selected to the league's All-Rookie Team (March 4). During the season, she earned Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the week twice.
During the season, several other Friars were recognized by the league.
Sara Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Player of the Week.
Clare Minnerath and Sandra Abstreither were both awarded Hockey East Defensive Players of the week.
Bailey Burton was awarded Rookie of the Week.
Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack finished the 2019-20 season with a 5-24-5 overall record and a 2-20-5 mark in the Hockey East Conference.
All-Time Series with the Warriors
Providence holds a 14-1-2 mark all-time against the Warriors, including a 6-0-1 mark on the road. The Friars swept Merrimack over three games during the 2019-20 season.
Who to Watch
Dominika Lásková and Keisha DiCaire are the top two returners for the Warriors from the 2020-21 campaign. Lásková netted 4 goals and tallied 13 assists last season, compared to DiCaire's 1 goal and 12 assists.
In net, Merrimack will have to replace Léa-Kristine Demers after posting 795 saves last season. Emma Gorski will look to fill the duty in the net, after playing in just nine games last season.
