Season Primer
- The Friars will begin their 2020-21 season this weekend against a Boston College team coming off a two-game sweep over UMass last weekend.
- Providence returns eight of its top nine scorers from a season ago, including
Tyce Thompson, who finished third in the NCAA scoring race in 2019-20 with 44 points (19g, 25a). Junior defenseman Mike Callahan, a reigning First Team Hockey East All-Star, returns to the Friar blue line after a 28-point season. Senior
Greg Printz posted career-highs in goals (15), assists (12) and points (27).
- The competition in between the pipes this season will be stout as senior

Anton Martinsson and sophomore transfer
Jaxson Stauber will vie for time in net.

Friars Represented On 2021 U.S. National Junior Team
Nate Leaman was been named head coach of the 2021 U.S. National Junior Team, while Friar Director of Hockey Operations,
Theresa Feaster, was named to the staff as a video caoch. Three Friars were named to Team USA's preliminary roster earlier this week:
Brett Berard,
Cam McDonald and
Patrick Moynihan. The U.S. National Junior Team will take part in the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2020 – Jan. 5, 2021, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. Team USA is seeking its fifth medal in six years at the event.

Three Current and Future Friars Drafted
Forwards
Brett Berard and
Chase Yoder were both selected on day two of the 2020 NHL Draft in October. Berard was selected by the New York Rangers in the fifth round (134th overall), while Yoder was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round (170th overall). Future Friar Riley Duran was taken by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round (182nd overall).

Patrick Moynihan led all NCAA freshmen with 10 power-play goals last season.

Meet the New Guys
Providence welcomed in a seven-member incoming class for this season - four freshmen and three transfer student-athletes. The freshmen are:
Brett Berard,
Nick Poisson,
Uula Ruikka and
Chase Yoder. Sophomore
Jaxson Stauber is a transfer from Minnesota State, while
Matt Tugnutt and
Anton Martinsson are graduate transfers from Sacred Heart and Alaska Fairbanks, respectively.

Twenty-one different Friars had at least one point last season. Seven of those players had 15+ points and four of them had 25+.

Strong on the Power Play
The Friars are 34-for-133 on the power play in 2019-20 and are ranked eighth nationally with a 25.6% conversion rate. Providence has scored at least one power-play goal in 24 out of the season's 34 games. In nine of those games, the Friars have netted multiple goals on advantages. - Eight different players have scored on power-play chances, including nine goals from
Patrick Moynihan and eight from
Tyce Thompson.

Providence ranks sixth in the nation with 84 goals returning this season. The 82% of returning goals ranks fourth nationally. The Friars also return 76% of their points from last season, which also ranks sixth.

The Friars have the 10th youngest roster in the NCAA this season (average age of 21 years, 181 days). Freshman
Brett Berard is the fifth youngest player on an NCAA roster this year.

Providence holds the nation's second longest-active NCAA appearance streak, having made a sixth- straight tournament appearance in 2018-19. Denver leads the pack with 12-straight appearances.

Scouting the Eagles
Despite missing sophomore Alex Newhook to Team Canada's World Junior Camp, the Eagles started off strong last weekend with 4-3 and 6-3 victories over UMass. Sophomore Matt Boldy led the way with a goal and three assists over the weekend, while Mike Hardman and Logan Hutsko chipped in with three points each. Spencer Knight stopped 60-of-66 shots he faced against the Minutemen to improve to 25-8-2 in his career.

Series History vs. Boston College
The teams split last season's series back in the fall as both road teams emerged with victories. The Friars scored a 6-2 win on the road last Oct. 25, while the Eagles came out with a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena on Nov. 2. Overall, the schools have split the last six meetings dating back to March of 2019.
