Parker Ford and
Matt Koopman scored in a 1:15 span in the first period and
Tyce Thompson added a third period insurance goal as the No. 15 Providence College men's hockey team defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Saturday night (Jan. 2) at Schneider Arena.
-Vermont's Vlad Dzhioshvili scored early against the Friars 2:30 into the opening stanza. Assisted by Owen Grant and Jacques Bouquot. This was the first time Vermont has scored had held a lead all season.

Parker Ford broke a Friars scoring drought with the equalizer at 15:32 of the first period, firing a quick wrist shot under the glove of Harmon.

Matt Koopman followed up 1:15 later on a rebound with what proved to be the game- winning goal, giving the Friars a 2-1 lead.
Craig Needham and
Ben Mirageas earned the assists.
-Both teams were scoreless in the middle frame and went into the second intermission at 2-1 in favor of the Friars.

Tyce Thompson joined in on the scoring 6:32 into the final period and gave Providence a two-goal cushion at 3-1.
Nick Poisson slid a backhand feed to Thompson cutting through the left circle and his quick release went between the pads of Harmon.
Jason O'Neill also assisted on the play.

-The Friars outshot the Catamounts in all three periods, including 20-5 in the final period to stymie a Vermont comeback bid.

Jaxson Stauber recorded 20 saves for the night and improved his impressive season totals to a 1.30 GAA and a .946 save percentage.

Matt Tugnutt posted a game-high seven shots on goal.

World Juniors Success
- The 2021 World Junior Championship concluded on Tuesday night as the United States, led by Head Coach
Nate Leaman, downed previously undefeated Canada, 2-0. Friars Director of Hockey Operations
Theresa Feaster became the first female member of a WJC coaching staff and first to win a gold medal. Student-athletes
Brett Berard and
Patrick Moynihan had successful performances in the tournament as Berard posted one goal, four assists and a +8 rating while Moynihan chipped in with two assists and a +1 rating. They became the fourth and fifth members of the program to win a gold medal at the tournament.

Three Current and Future Friars Drafted
Forwards
Brett Berard and
Chase Yoder were both selected on day two of the 2020 NHL Draft in October. Berard was selected by the New York Rangers in the fifth round (134th overall), while Yoder was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round (170th overall). Future Friar Riley Duran was taken by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round (182nd overall).

Providence welcomed in a seven-member incoming class for this season - four freshmen and three transfer student-athletes. The freshmen are:

Scouting the Terriers
The Terriers will open their season this weekend against the Friars, becoming the final Hockey East team to return to play. Key returners include: David Farrence (14-29-43), Robert Mastrosimone (7-10-17), Domenick Fensore (3-13-16), Matthew Quercia (6-7-13), Jake Wise (2-11-13), Case McCarthy (2-10-12) and Ethan Phillips (2-8-10). Incoming freshmen Drew Commesso, Luke Tuch and Dylan Peterson were selected in October's NHL Draft. Commesso and sophomore Ashton Abel expect to battle for time in between the pipes.

Providence is unbeaten in the last three matchups (1-0-2), including a wild 6-5 victory over the Terriers back on Nov. 9, 2019. Friday marks the first game between the two teams at Walter Brown Arena since Oct. 22, 2004.
