Volleyball Falls To St. John’s In Five Sets, 3-2

The Friars return to action on Friday, Nov. 7 at 1:00 p.m. against Xavier.


QUEENS, N.Y.- The Providence College volleyball team (11-14, 2-10 BIG EAST) was defeated by St. John's University (8-17 overall, 4-8 BIG EAST) in five sets (3-2) during BIG EAST action.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's earned a 25-22 victory in the first set.
  • St. John's came out strong gaining a 12-8 lead and forced a Providence timeout.
  • The Friars called another timeout after the Red Storm extended the lead to 17-9.
  • Sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) combined for block to narrow St. John's lead to 23-20.
  • The Red Storm maintained their lead to win the first set, 25-22.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-18.
  • Providence jumped out to an 8-5 advantage, prompting a St. John's timeout.
  • St. John's came back and tied the set at 14-14.
  • The Friars went on an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead (22-14).
  • Providence maintained its lead to win the second set, 25-18.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the third set, 26-24.
  • Providence came out quick with an 8-4 lead, forcing a St. John's timeout.
  • A kill by Berry extended the Friars' lead to 18-14.
  • St. John's came back and tied the set at 24-24.
  • The Red Storm scored back-to-back points to win the set26-24).
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the fourth set, 25-21.
  • The two teams played evenly, tying the set at 8-8.
  • Providence took the lead at 13-10, forcing a St. John's timeout.
  • A kill by junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) advanced the Friars' lead to 19-15.
  • Providence maintained its lead to win the set, 25-21.
 
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the set, and the match 3-2.
  • St John's came out quick with an 8-3 lead.
  • The Red Storm extended their lead to 12-7, forcing a Friars timeout.
  • St. John's maintained its lead to win the set, 15-10, and the match, 3-2.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Taylor and Adkins both had double-doubles. Taylor had 17 kills and 10 digs. Adkins recorded 14 digs and 12 digs.
  • Freshman Kaia Easterbrook (Canton, Ga.) tallied eight blocks.
  • Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 23 digs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars return to Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. next weekend for more BIG EAST action. Providence will face Xavier on Friday, Nov. 7 at 1:00 p.m. They will then play Butler on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4:00 p.m.
