Women’s Soccer Falls To Connecticut, 2-1

Stephanie Schoeley scored the lone goal for the Friars in their first BIG EAST loss this season.

STORRS, Conn. -  The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Connecticut, 2-1, as the Friars suffered their first BIG EAST loss of the season in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, Oct. 3. Providence is now 0-1-1 in conference play and moved to 2-2-7 overall, while Connecticut earned its first BIG EAST win to improve to 1-0-1 and 3-2-5 overall.

GAME FLOW & NOTES 

  • Connecticut came out hot as they scored and went up, 1-0, in the third minute (2:31) of the match. Tianna Righetti battled through defenders to tap the ball in the bottom left corner for the Husky goal.
  • Goalkeeper Caitlin Daley (Norwich, Conn.) made two impressive diving saves in the first 18 minutes to keep the Friars within one goal.
  • Junior defender Stephanie Schoeley (Thedford, Ontario) tied it up for the Friars, 1-1, during the 29th minute (28:03) in her first goal this season. Providence was given a corner kick where the ball fumbled around the center and Schoeley tapped it into the goal.
  • The Huskies outshot the Friars, 6-5, after the first half.
  • Daley opened the second half with two more diving saves as the goalkeeper led the Friar defense.
  • This game marked goalkeeper Daley's first career start for the Friars and the first game a goalkeeper has played the full 90 minutes this season.
  • Connecticut took back the lead in the 67th minute (66:43) as Chloe Shimkin shot was sent into the bottom right of the goal. The Husky goal was assisted by Anaya Johnson.
  • Anya Montano received a yellow card on Connecticut in the 78th minute (77:49).
  • Connecticut outshot Providence 15-9.
