Providence enters the BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed DePaul on Friday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the first round.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Trailing by 17 points in the fourth quarter, the Providence College women's basketball team mounted a furious comeback to get within four points with 2:27 left, before falling to Marquette, 69-65, in the regular-season finale on March 1 in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 14-17 overall (7-13 BIG EAST), while Marquette improved to 18-11 overall (12-8 BIG EAST).
Providence will enter BIG EAST Tournament play as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed DePaul in the first round on Friday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m. The tournament will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., culminating with the Championship Game on Monday, March 9.
1ST QUARTER:
• A 9-0 run gave the Friars a 20-14 lead with 2:56 on the clock.
• Providence led 22-16 with 2:09 remaining, before Marquette closed the quarter with a 7-0 run.
• The Golden Eagles led 23-22 at the intermission.
• The Friars shot 77-percent in the first quarter (10-13), including a 67-percent clip from beyond the arc (2-3).
• Marquette shot 41-percent from the field (7-17), including a 4-8 performance from three-point territory (.500).
• Marquette was +5 at the free throw line in the first quarter (5-7), while Providence did not attempt a free throw.
2ND QUARTER:
• Marquette held a 31-30 lead at the media timeout as both teams scored eight points in the opening 5:47 of play in the quarter.
• The Golden Eagles used a quick 4-0 spurt out of the break to claim a five-point lead (35-30) with 1:35 to play.
• Providence responded with a 7-2 run to close the quarter and trailed by just one at halftime (38-37).
• Three Friars were into double figures at the half, led by Payton Dunbar's 11 points. Teneisia Brown and Sabou Gueye each scored 10 first-half points.
3RD QUARTER:
• Marquette used a 7-0 run to claim a 51-43 lead with 3:15 left in the quarter.
• Gueye halted the Golden Eagles' run with a lay-up at the 2:49 mark, but Marquette scored eight unanswered points to close the frame (59-45).
• Marquette outscored Providence 21-8 overall in the quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence trailed by 17 with 8:36 left in the game.
• The Friars outscored Marquette 15-3 to mount a furious comeback and got within four with 2:27 to play (65-61).
• Marquette pushed back out to a seven-point lead, which Providence cut back to four with 20.2-seconds left (69-65).
• The score remained unchanged the rest of the way as Marquette escaped with the 69-65 win.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye finished the game with 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.
• Gueye is just the third BIG EAST player in the last 15 years to record at least 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a BIG EAST game. She joined Aneesah Morrow (31 points, 22 rebounds, five assists and three blocks vs. Providence on 2/18/2023) and Maddy Siegrist (31 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks vs. DePaul on 1/4/2021).
• Dunbar finished with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
• Dunbar netted her 50th three-point bucket of the season with 3:54 left in the first quarter. She is one of just 11 players in program history to hit 50-or-more threes in a season.
• Dunbar is tied for 16th in program history for threes made in a single season, with 52.
• Orlagh Gormley added 10 points, five assist and three steals.
• Brown recorded 10 points, five rebounds and one assist.
• The Friars were defeated for the first time this season when four players scored in double figures (3-1).
• Providence dropped to 9-2 on the season when scoring 65-or-more points in a game.
