Women's Hoops Comes Up Big In Conference Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Villanova, 62-49, in BIG EAST Conference action, in Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday, January 9. Villanova entered Alumni Hall unbeaten in conference play, with a 2-0 record.
Graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) led the Friars with a game-high 12 points and two blocked shots. Trippany also added a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) finished the night with 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Providence trailed by as many as eight points in the first half (15-7), with 14:19 on the clock, before finishing the half with a 19-10 run to lead, 26-25, at the break. Trippany scored seven of her 12 points in the first half.
The Friars shot 54.5% (12-22) from the floor in the second half, to outscore the Wildcats, 36-24, and finish the game with a decisive 13-point victory (62-49). The 13-point Friar win proved to be the Friars largest margin of victory during the 2001-02 season. In turn, Villanova shot just 33.3% (9-27) in the second half.
Forward Nicole Druckenmiller scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats. Druckenmiller connected on 11 of her points in the first half of action, shooting four-of-nine from the field, including three-of-six from three-point territory. She finished the game four-of-13 (3-8 from three-point).
Providence improves to 8-7 overall, and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. Villanova falls to 8-5 overall and, 2-1 in the BIG EAST. Providence travels to Syracuse to take on the Orangewomen, Saturday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m.
