PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (5-3) defeated Central Connecticut State University (0-7) in four sets (3-1) on Friday, Sept. 12, at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I., in the opening match of the 20th Annual Friar Classic.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:Â Providence earned a 25-21 victory in the first set.
- Central Connecticut came out quick with a 7-4 lead.
- CCSU maintained its lead, forcing a Providence timeout at 16-11.
- The Friars tied the game at 20-20 with an ace by junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas), forcing a Blue Devil timeout.
- Another ace by Taylor put Providence ahead 21-20.
- The Friars went on a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-21.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:Â Central Connecticut won the second set, 25-23.
- Providence came out strong with a 10-4 lead, forcing a Central Connecticut timeout.
- The Blue Devils fought back and tied the set, 12-12.
- The teams played evenly, and were eventually tied, 23-23.
- Central Connecticut scored two-straight points to win the set, 25-23.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:Â Providence won the third set, 25-23.
- Providence jumped out to an 8-5 advantage.
- Central Connecticut tied the set, 11-11.
- The Friars went on a 6-2 run, forcing a Blue Devil timeout (17-13).
- Providence extended its lead to 22-18 with a kill by Taylor.
- The Friars held the lead and went on to win the set, 25-23.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:Â Providence won the set 25-11, and the match 3-1.
- Providence jumped out to a 7-2 lead, forcing a Central Connecticut timeout.
- The Blue Devils took another timeout after an ace by sophomore Audrey Kocon (Shoreview, Minn.) extended the Friars' lead to 12-2.
- A kill by Taylor further advanced the lead to 17-7.
- Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) recorded an ace to give Providence 25-11 victory in the set, and the match, 3-1.
MATCH NOTES:
- Taylor recorded a double-double, with 14 kills and 13 digs.
- Junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) tallied five blocks.
- Pride led the defense with 21 digs.
- Providence notched 42 kills, 15 aces, 9 blocks, and 62 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT:Â The Friars will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 13, for the second day of the Friar Volleyball Classic. Their first match of the day is slated for 2:00 p.m. against Merrimack.
