Carly Van Benten Named To BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Van Benten scored the game-winning goal for the Friars in back-to-back matches last week.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College senior forward Carly van Benten (Ashburn, Va.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for field hockey on Sept. 29. It marked Van Benten's first appearance of the season on the league's honor roll and second of her career.
 
Van Benten, a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, scored the game-winning goal in back-to-back matches for the Friars last week. On Sept. 25, she tallied the game-winner against BIG EAST foe Georgetown with 3:07 left in regulation to lift Providence to a 1-0 victory. Van Benten closed the weekend with the deciding goal in a 2-1 win at American on Sept. 27.
 
Through 10 games, Van Benten ranks second on the team in points (12) and goals (six). She has scored a goal in each of the Friars last three matches. Additionally, her six goals mark a single-season career high, and four of her six goals have been game winners.
 
Providence (8-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) returns to action with a pair of home games at Lennon Family field in Providence, R.I. The matches coincide with the College's annual Homecoming Weekend and will serve as the program's Alumni Weekend as well. On Friday, Oct. 2, Providence will host No. 7 UConn in BIG EAST play at 3:00 p.m. The Friars' match against Connecticut is designated as the team's Pink Out Friartown game, sponsored by Rhode Island Medical Imaging. Providence will conclude the weekend with a non-conference match against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Noon.
