Friars Conclude Seven-Game Road Stretch With 2-1 Victory At American

Saar Koper and Carly van Benten each scored one goal; Pauline Gineste earned the victory in goal against her former team.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Patriot League preseason favorite American, 2-1, on Sunday, Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C. The Friars improved to 8-2 overall on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 6-4 overall. Senior Carly van Benten delivered the game-winning goal for the second-consecutive match and sophomore Saar Koper matched her career-high with three points on one goal and one assist.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Koper found the back of the for her second goal of the season at the 8:00 minute mark. She converted off a penalty corner, assisted by junior Johanna Mahner.
• Providence dominated the possession game in the first quarter, which led to a 6-0 advantage in shots, 3-0 edge in shots on goal and 3-0 margin in corners.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars continued to control the possession and allowed just one shot in the first half, which American logged at 28:30 of the second quarter.
• Providence maintained its one-goal advantage into halftime (1-0).
• The Friars outshot American, 3-1, in the second quarter and 9-1 in the first half overall.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• American earned its first penalty corner opportunity at 35:30. The play was initially broken, but American's  Maura Reed recovered the ball and sent it into the circle for a game-tying goal by Kaleigh Missimer off a deflection (1-1).
• Providence quickly gained a penalty corner on the other end, less than a minute later, on its ensuing possession and Van Benten knocked home her sixth goal of the season off a feed from Koper at 36:31.
• Providence outshot American, 2-1, in the third and both teams registered one attacking corner.
• The Friars carried their 2-1 lead into the final frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• American nearly tied the game with just under four minutes to play as Jordan Reicher hit the post on a shot attempt during a penalty corner at 56:09.
• The Eagles attempted seven shots overall during the final quarter, but the Friars' defense held firm to secure the victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Van Benten scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the second-consecutive match. 
• Van Benten's six goals this season rank second on the team and mark a single-season career high for the senior. 
• Koper's goal marked her second of the season and second of her career.
• Koper finished the game with three points (1g / 1a), which matched her career high.
• Mahner posted her team-best sixth assist of the season.
• Gineste, who spent the last four seasons at American, started in goal for the Friars and earned her second victory of the season with two saves.
• For the game, Providence led in shots (11-9) and shots on goal (7-3). Providence and American each recorded five penalty corners. 
• The Eagles entered the match on a six-game win streak during which time they outscored their opponents, 26-2, and posted four shut-out victories.
• Providence closed out a stretch of seven-consecutive road games and posted a 6-1 mark.
• The Friars' six road victories this season are the most since 2018. That year, Providence was 6-6 away from home.
• Providence will return home to Lennon Family Field, where it is scheduled to play six-straight games.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. to host No. 7 Connecticut in BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, Oct. 2 at 3:00 p.m. The Friars have played seven-straight matches on the road leading up to Friday's match-up against UConn.
