Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking Loss To No. 7 UConn In A Shootout

Carly van Benten scored the Friars' lone goal in regulation.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team led No. 7 UConn for 60 minutes of game action (1-0), until the Huskies scored on a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation. The game-tying goal was followed by a scoreless overtime period before UConn claimed the win in a penalty shootout. The Huskies won the shootout, 3-1, and earned the 2-1 victory. Providence dropped to 8-3 on the season (2-1 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 8-1 (3-0 BIG EAST).
 
GAME FLOW / NOTES:
• Senior forward Carly van Benten gave the Friars a 1-0 lead at the 13:51 mark of the first quarter. Senior Florencia Talarico carried the ball into the top of the circle and dumped a pass to sophomore Ariana Ftorek on the left baseline. Ftorek sent a sweeping shot toward the cage from a low angle and was deflected across the goal line by Van Benten. 
• Ftorek was credited with the assist on the play.
• The Friars outshot the Huskies, 4-1, in the opening quarter.
• Providence maintained its one-goal lead into halftime (1-0).
• At the break, UConn held a 5-4 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in penalty corners.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Porter registered four saves through the first two quarters.
• UConn applied offensive pressure in the third quarter to record a 5-0 edge in shots, but Porter stood tall in the cage to keep the Friars ahead.
• The Huskies scored the game-tying goal to force overtime with no time left on the clock after earning a penalty corner with one-second left in regulation.
• Olivia McKenna was credited with the goal, as she knocked the ball into the cage at the right post during a scramble.
• The two teams headed to overtime knotted up at 1-1.
• After a scoreless 15-minute overtime, the game went to a shootout.
• The Huskies earned the win (2-1) with a 3-1 edge in the penalty shootout.
• Porter finished the game with eight saves.
• Van Benten has scored a goal in each of the Friars' last four games.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4 against UMass Lowell. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at Noon. A live stream will be available on ESPN+.
