Field Hockey Edges Colgate In Overtime, 4-3

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Colgate, 4-3, in overtime on Sunday, October 17 in Hamilton, N.Y. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) scored the game-tying goal for Providence with 1:07 left in regulation and then guided the Friars to a 4-3 victory with the game-winning goal 1:45 into the overtime. Providence improves to 8-9 overall on the season, while the Raiders drop to 10-5 overall.

Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead 24:42 into the first half off a penalty corner assisted by McGow and junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.). Colgate responded with its first goal at the 31:35 mark of the first to even the score, 1-1, as Ashley Schneider connected off a pass from Natalie Heller. The Friars closed out the first 35 minutes of action and took a 2-1 lead into halftime as sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) netted a goal with 1:14 on the clock off an assist from sophomore Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.).

The Raiders rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the second half with two-consecutive goals from Sarah McCarthy and Schneider at the 48:29 and 53:01 marks, respectively. McCarthy's goal was scored off a penalty corner and was assisted by Courtney Collins and Kath Shelley. Schneider connected off a feed from McCarthy.

The Raiders held their lead until 1:07 left in regulation as McGow scored an unassisted goal to tie the game 3-3 and force overtime. McGow then scored the game-winning goal 1:45 into the overtime session on a penalty corner, assisted by Lary.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) made nine saves for Providence in the win. Jacque DeMarco posted nine saves for the Raiders.

Providence College (8-9, 0-3 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday, October 20 as they face cross-town rival Brown at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played on Warner Roof at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
