Field Hockey Defeats Maine In Overtime, 3-2

ORONO, Maine - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Maine, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday, September 5 in Orono, Maine. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Friars and marked the team's first win of the season as PC improves to 1-3 on the year. Senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) scored two goals, including the game winner during the overtime session. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) scored one goal in the victory and tallied two assists, including the feed to Phillips to win the game. Providence started the scoring as Phillips connected on her first goal of the afternoon during a penalty corner 15:04 into action. McGow was credited with the assist. The Black Bears answered with their first goal of the game just three minutes and 40 seconds later as Amie Dubois found the back of the cage on a Maine penalty corner. Joanna Fernandes and Shaunessy Saucier earned assists on the play. McGow put the Friars back on top, 2-1, with 6:00 minutes remaining in the first half on another penalty corner. Sophomore Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) was credited with the first assist of her collegiate career on the goal. Maine's Rachael Hilgar scored an unassisted goal to tie the score, 2-2, just under 12 minutes into the second half. Hilgar's goal proved to be pivotal as both teams were scoreless the remainder of the game, setting up the overtime session. Phillips found the back of the cage with just 24 seconds left in the first overtime on a pass from McGow, giving the Friars their first win of the season and first win against Maine since, 1997. Providence (1-3) will return to action on Wednesday, September 8 against Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played on the campus of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
