THE MATCH-UP... The Providence College women's basketball plays host to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Tuesday, December 5 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. It marks the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams.
FIRST OF TWO... Tuesday's game between Providence and Seton Hall marks the first of two meetings scheduled for this season between the BIG EAST rivals. The second meeting is set for Tuesday, January 23 in South Orange, N.J. at 7:00 p.m. The second game of the series also will be televised by CSTV.
PROVIDENCE ALL-TIME IN BIG EAST OPENERS... Providence is 14-10 all-time in BIG EAST Conference season-openers. Last season, the Friars earned a 58-57 victory over Cincinnati on January 7 in the 2005 BIG EAST opener. Prior to the win over Cincinnati, PC had not won a BIG EAST opener since 1999 when it defeated West Virginia, 74-64, on December 8. The Friars and Pirates have met five times in the history of the two programs in BIG EAST openers. PC holds a 3-2 advantage in BIG EAST openers when playing Seton Hall.
PROVIDENCE ALL-TIME VS. SETON HALL... Providence and Seton Hall have met 46 times in the history of the two women's basketball programs. Providence leads the all-time series, 24-22. Providence won the most recent meeting between the two teams, 71-69, played on December 12, 2006 in South Orange, N.J. Prior to the Friar's victory on that day, Seton Hall had earned victories in each of seven previous meetings.
PROVIDENCE VS. SETON HALL ALL-TIME AT ALUMNI HALL... The Friars and Pirates have met 19 times in the history of the two women's basketball programs at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Providence leads the series in those games with a 13-6 record. The Pirates however, won the last meeting between the two schools at Alumni Hall, 69-59, on January 18, 2006.
HOME COOKIN'... The Providence women's basketball team has a 7-2 record this season, including a 4-0 mark at home in Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars' four home victories equal the number of wins they recorded at home a year ago. During the 2005-06 season, Providence compiled a 4-9 record during its 13 home games. CHASING #8... The Providence women's basketball team is one win shy of equaling its win total from a year ago after playing just nine games on the 2006-07 schedule. The Friars are currently 7-2 this season. In 2005-06, PC finished the year with an 8-19 overall record.
PROVIDENCE OFF TO BEST START SINCE 1990-91... Through nine games on the 2006-07 schedule, the Friar women's basketball team owns a 7-2 record. It marks the best start since the 1990-91 season, when PC began the year with a 13-1 record.
PROVIDENCE PUTS UP 70 POINTS OR MORE IN THREE-CONSECUTIVE GAMES... The Providence College women's basketball team has scored at least 70 points in three-consecutive games this season. On November 15, PC scored 83 points to defeat Saint Peter's 83-68. On November 18, PC defeated Northeastern, 75-74. In their most recent game, the Friars defeated Saint Francis (N.Y.), 72-46. The last time PC scored 70 points or more in three-straight games was during the 2002-03 season. On January 11, 2003 the Friars netted 80 points against Pittsburgh. PC followed with 75 points against West Virginia on January 15, 2003, and on January 18, 2003, the Friars recorded 74 points against Dartmouth.
THE 70s... Through nine games this season, Providence has eclipsed the 70-point mark five times. It marks the most 70+ point games for the Friars since registering six during the 2002-03 season. PC has scored over 65 points in each of its last seven games.
SCORE IT... The Friars defeated Saint Peter's, 83-68, on November 15 in Providence, R.I. PC's 83 points are the most for the Friars in a single game since February 26, 2002 when they tallied 91 points in a victory over Pittsburgh.
LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY SINCE 2000-01... On November 28, Providence defeated New Hampshire by 26 points (79-53). The Friar's 26-point margin of victory is the largest since defeating Princeton by 27 points (69-42) on December 31, 2000.
FRIARS ARE 7-1 WHEN LEADING AT THE HALF... Providence is 7-1 this season when leading at the half. PC's only loss of the season after leading at the half came against Sacred Heart (76-69) on December 1. The Friars held a 34-32 lead at halftime over the Pioneers, but were outscored, 44-35, in the second half by Sacred Heart.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE... Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) has a team-high four double-doubles this season. She tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds against Saint Peter's on November 15 for her first double-double of the season. On November 21, she connected for 20 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year against Saint Francis (N.Y.). At the UNC Greensboro Thanksgiving Classic, Marandola registered 19 points and grabbed 11 boards against North Carolina A&T (11/24/06) and followed with 28 points and 10 rebounds against UNC Greensboro (11/25/06) Marandola has five double-doubles in her career. Freshman Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) is the only other Friar to record a double-double this season. On November 21, Holmes scored 10 points and dished 10 assists against Saint Francis (N.Y.).
DOUBLE-DIGIT BOARDS... Providence has had a player reach double-digit rebounds in six of its first nine games this season. Junior Danielle Howard (Willingboro, N.J.) pulled down a game and career high 11 rebounds in PC's 52-46 victory over Manhattan on November 10 in Riverdale, N.Y. On November 12, sophomore Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in a 62-53 victory over Brown in Providence, R.I. On November 15, sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) pulled down 11 rebounds in an 83-68 victory over Saint Peter's. Marandola recorded her second double-digit rebound game of the year on November 21 against Saint Francis (N.Y.) with 10 boards. Marandola went on to tally 11 rebounds against North Carolina A&T (11/24/05) and 10 boards against UNC Greensboro (11/25/06). Marandola has a team-best four double-digit rebound games this season and five in her career.
20 SOMETHING... Four Friars have reached the 20-point plateau this season in a single game through nine contests. Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) leads the way with three 20+ point games, including a career-best 28 points against UNC Greensboro on November 25. Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) owns two, 20+ point games. She scored 26 points against New Hampshire (11/29/06) and 21 points against Sacred Heart (12/1/06). Sophomore Catherine Bove (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) have each achieved the feat once. Bove netted a career-best 22 points against Saint Peter's (11/15/06) and Cournoyer tallied a career-best 24 points against North Carolina A&T (11/24/06).
Chelsea Marandola NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL IN BACK-TO-BACK WEEKS... Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll on November 20. In the league's first weekly release of the season, Marandola was honored for leading PC to a 4-0 record to start the season. She averaged a team-best 16.3 points per game and added 7.5 rebounds per contest. She combined to hit 22-of-43 field goals (.512), including 4-of-8 from beyond the three point arc (.500). She also hit 17-of-19 free throws in the first four games (.895). On November 27, Marandola made her way onto the BIG EAST honor roll for the second-straight week after leading PC to a 2-1 week with three-consecutive double-doubles. In three games, she averaged 22.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. She was named to the UNC Greensboro Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team on November 25. In the championship game against UNC Greensboro, she posted a career-high 28 points.
MARANDOLA LEADS BIG EAST CONFERENCE IN FREE-THROW PERCENTAGE... Sophomore guard Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) leads the BIG EAST Conference in overall free-throw percentage this season. She has connected on 40-of-43 attempts from the foul line for a shooting percentage of 0.930. Marandola also is ranked in six other categories among BIG EAST Conference players. She is second in minutes per game (35.44 mpg), tied for fifth in scoring (18.0 ppg), seventh in defensive rebounding (6.22 drpg), ninth in field-goal percentage (0.566, 56-99), 10th in three-point field-goal percentage (0.435, 10-23) and 13th in rebounding (8.1 rpg).
SCOUTING SETON HALL... The Seton Hall University women's basketball team enters Tuesday's game against Providence with a 5-3 overall record. The Pirates are 3-1 at home in South Orange, N.J., but have combined to record two wins and two losses (2-2) on their opponents home courts and at neutral sites. Two Pirates are averaging double figures in scoring led by Monique Blake's 12.1 points per game. Heta Korpivaara is scoring an average of 10.9 points per game. Blake also leads the squad in rebounding (9.1 rpg). Shantel Brown and Ashley Booker have dished out 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Jadis Rhodin and Nicole Emery each own a team-high 14 steals. As a team, Seton Hall averages 62.9 points and 40.4 rebounds per game. The Pirates' opponents have averaged 59.8 points and 37.4 boards per contest.
CHASING 1,000... Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) is on pace to become the first Friar since the 2001 season to record 1,000 career points for the women's basketball team at Providence. Snyder currently has 870 career points, leaving her 130 points shy of the milestone. Monika Roberts '01 and Jen Gombotz '01 were the last Friars to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Roberts finished her career with 1,126 points, while Gombotz tallied 1,116 points. In 79 career games, Snyder has a scoring average of 11.0 points per game. This season, she is second among her teammates in scoring (15.6 ppg).
Kendria Holmes DISHES A BIG EAST LEADING 10 ASSISTS IN A SINGLE-GAME THIS SEASON... Freshman Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) is one of two players this season to dish a BIG EAST leading 10 assists in a single-game during the 2006-07 season. Holmes' 10 handouts came during a victory over Saint Francis (N.Y.) on November 21. Kia Wright of St. John's also dished out a league best 10 assists in a single game this season on November 25 against Brown University.
Kendria Holmes RANKED AMONG BIG EAST PLAYERS IN ASSISTS... Freshman Kendria Holmes (Charlotte, N.C.) ranks fifth among all BIG EAST Conference players in assists this season, through the Friar's first nine games of the year. Holmes has 39 assists for an average of 4.33 hand-outs per game. Holmes also is tied for 11th in the league in assist to turnover ratio (1.50).
TALL ORDER... Junior transfer Aga Lorenc (Lubycza, Poland) came to Providence College after two years at Miles Community College (Mont.). Lorenc stands 6-feet, 6-inches and is the tallest player ever to wear a Friar women's basketball uniform.
EVEN TALLER... The Friars boast the tallest roster all-time at Providence with three players registering 6'-4" and taller. Freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) is 6'-4", freshman Jessica Clark (Bronx, N.Y.) is 6'-5" and junior Aga Lorenc (Lubycza, Poland) is 6'-6". In addition to that trio of players, Providence has three more players on the roster who are 6'-1" or taller.
REJECTED... The Friars are averaging 4.2 blocked shots this season through nine games on the 2006-07 schedule. Junior Danielle Howard (Willingboro, N.J.) leads the way with nine blocked shots on the year. Freshman Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) is second on the team in blocks with seven. Eight other Friars have recorded at least one blocked shot. Including Howard and Cournoyer, five Friars in all have four or more blocked shots.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME... The Friars have enjoyed great success on their home court at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The women's basketball program is currently in the midst of its 32nd season and has posted an all-time record of 255-133 (.657) at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars are 4-0 this season at Alumni Hall. Last year, PC earned its 250th win all-time at Alumni Hall with a 57-55 victory over West Virginia on February 7, 2006.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH 14th IN 2006 PRESEASON BIG EAST COACHES' POLL... The Providence College women's basketball team was picked to finish 14th in the 2006 Preseason BIG EAST Coaches' Poll, which was released on October 26 at the league's annual women's basketball media day at ESPN Zone in New York, N.Y. Connecticut tops the preseason poll with 11 first-place votes, followed by Rutgers who earned five first-place votes. Syracuse and Seton Hall were picked to finish below the Friars in 15th and 16th place.
YOUTH DOMINATES STARTING LINE-UP... In the Friars' first nine games of the 2006-07 season, PC has started one senior (Shauna Snyder), one junior (Aga Lorenc), three sophomores (Shantee Darrian, Catherine Bove and Chelsea Marandola) and two freshmen (Kendria Holmes and Emily Cournoyer). In PC's last two games, the starting line-up has been comprised of Snyder (Sr.), Bove (So.), Marandola (So.), Holmes (Fr.) and Cournoyer (Fr.).
A LOOK AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HEAD COACH Phil Seymore... Phil Seymore embarks on his second season as head coach of the Providence College women's basketball team. In his first season with the Friars, he led the team to a 7.5 game improvement in the win column with an 8-19 overall record. He also guided PC to three BIG EAST wins, after suffering two-straight winless seasons in league play during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. In 2006-07, Seymore has guided Providence to a 7-2 record to start the year. PC's win over Manhattan to open the season on November 10, was the Friar's first season-opening win since the 2003-04 campaign. Additionally, Providence is off to its best start since the 1990-91 campaign. That year, PC got off to a 13-1 start.
