BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Lock Haven 1-0 in their season opener on Saturday, August 26, 2006 in Burlington, Vermont. The game was played at Moulton Winder Field on the campus of the University of Vermont.
The teams played to a scoreless first half with the Friars tallying three shots and Lock Haven posting seven shots. The second half remained scoreless until freshman, Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine ) scored the lone goal of the game with 5:05 left to give the Friars the, 1-0, win. The goal started on a Friar corner, when senior Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, New Hampshire) carried the ball towards the goal and took a shot from the left side that was saved. The shot rebounded back to Poulin who pushed it in for her first collegiate goal. The goal was unassisted. In the second half, the Friars outshot Lock Haven 11-4. Providence held the advantage in penalty corners 6-2 for the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) played 70 minutes in goal for Providence and made three saves. She registered the first shutout of her career. This also marks the first shutout for Providence since October 24, 2004, when Providence shutout Villanova, 5-0. Lock Haven goalkeeper, Becca Yerkes, made three saves in the game.
Providence (1-0) returns to action on Monday, August 28 against Vermont. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Burlington, Vt.
