PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to cross-town rival Brown, 2-1, on Wednesday, October 20. The match took place at the Warner Roof on the Brown University campus, in Providence, R.I. The match which remained tied, 1-1, through two overtime periods was finally decided by penalty strokes.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead 6:47 into the game when Tacy Zysk scored on a deflection. Neither team would score the remainder of the half as Providence held a 9-4 advantage in shots.
In the second half of play, sophomore Nicole Fernandez (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season off a rebound. The goal came at the 63:25 mark and evened the match at 1-1. At the end of regulation the match remained tied.
Although the Friars held a 11-4 advantage in shots during the two 15 minute overtime periods, they were unable to convert on any of the opportunities. After 100 minutes of play could not determine a winner, the game went into a stroke-off. Providence successfully scored on three of its five penalty strokes as Brown converted a perfect four-of-four.
For the game, Providence held a 33-16 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) took 12 shots on the day for the Friars, five of which were on goal.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, October 23 as they host No. 10 Louisville at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
