The Monarchs cashed in on each of their goals in the first half of play. Sarah Breen struck first in the 19th minute as she collected a loose ball in the circle, just steps from Providence's goalkeeper, and fired a shot into the cage. Katy Fuhrman added an insurance goal in the 26th minute on a reverse stick shot from 12 yards out on the left side of the circle. Fuhrman's attempt found the lower right side of the cage. Both of the Monarch's goals were unassisted.
Old Dominion held an 11-9 advantage in shots and penalty corners were even, 2-2. Providence College goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded seven saves in the cage, while ODU's Megan Hept stopped four shots.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 26 against non-conference foe UMass Lowell at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the program will honor its senior class with an on-field ceremony. The Friars' who will be honored include Clymer, Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany), Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.), Callie Vitalo (East Setauket, N.Y.), Mimi Beck (Short Hills, N.J.) and Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). Graduate student Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) also will be recognized.
