Field Hockey Drops 5-3 Decision At Northeastern

DEDHAM, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Northeastern, 5-3, on Sunday, Sept. 7. The Huskies rattled off four goals in the decisive second half as NU celebrated the opening of Dedham Field in Dedham, Mass.

Northeastern opened the scoring at the 12:57 mark as Kelly Dunn connected off a direct shot on a penalty corner. Kate Carlson and Natalie Stewart were credited with assists on the play.

Providence evened the score just 1:21 later as senior Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) got loose for her third goal of the year. After 35 minutes of play, Northeastern held a 6-5 advantage in shots (3-2 SOG) and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners.

The Huskies scored three-straight goals to start the second half and took a 4-1 lead. The Friars rallied to score two late goals at 60:21 and 66:31, but the deficit proved too large. Juniors Emily Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.)was credited with both goals, while senior Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) notched one assist.

Northeastern out-shot Providence 13-11 in the game and finished the day with a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Corners played a significant factor in the game as Northeastern converted four of their five goals.

Providence returns to action on Friday, September 12 against Michigan. The game will be played in Ann Arbor, Mich. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
